Dora sits in a valley surrounded by mountains covered with Douglas fir, cedar, tan oak, maple, myrtle, alder and madrone trees. The East Fork of the Coquille River winds through the valley with some of the best steelhead fishing in the area. Dora is an unincorporated area of Coos County and consists mainly of the Dora Center which houses the library, a community church and serves as a community meeting place. The volunteer Fire Department is on the same campus. We have a diverse population involving varied occupations living on surrounding ranches, farms, and small home sites. Dora is also home to Frona Park, where campsites are available for a small fee.
1976-
The first Dora library was organized in a former barn at the home of Ron and Carol Mason. Esther Jenkins and Evelyn Lynn cataloged and sorted books assisted by librarians Shirley Easton and Judy Romans. It opened on April 4th with a dedication attended by 150 people.
1981
The Dora School closed, leaving the building vacant with two classrooms, a gym, and a cafeteria. The community library was relocated to one of the classrooms. The library had no official open hours and books were checked out on the honor system.
1987
Dora’s community library was reorganized and reopened under the leadership of Esther Jenkins. Book shelves were built, books were sorted and cataloged. Using volunteers, the library began operating four hours a day. The first library board was formed.
1988
The Dora Corporation was formed as a non-profit corporation, to further availability of library services to the rural area. The Coos County Commissioners entered into a contract with the Dora Corporation to provide library services, making Dora an official Coos County Library. During the first year of operation in the county system, the library operated without a budget.
Our mission is to maintain and improve the quality of life for all citizens of our community by providing free and equal access to ideas, technology, and diverse materials presented in various media formats, and to create an environment supporting lifelong learning, personal development, and enrichment.
